Karika 42: Why the subtle body transmigrates: the actor

To accomplish the purpose of the soul [experience or liberation], this subtle body takes on one gross body after another, like an actor adopting role after role. It does so by reason of [the eight bhāvas of the Intellect], its efficient cause, and in conjunction with the all-pervading power of prakriti, [its material cause].
