From the unmanifest prakriti emerges the Intellect (buddhi), from that [Intellect] emerges the Ego (ahankara), from that [Ego] emerges a collection of sixteen [elements], and from the five [subtle objects] of the sixteen [elements] emerge the five gross elements.

Sixteen come from the Ego: the eleven senses and the five subtle objects. The gross elements come from the subtle.
