Karika 1: The three sorrows, and the search for a remedy
The words
Translation
Since everyone is tormented by the three types of sorrows [ādhyātmika, ādhibhautika and ādhidaivika], an eagerness for their removal arises. One may argue that if there are readily available solutions in this world to get rid of these sorrows, [then what is the need to write this scripture?] This [objection] is not valid, as these solutions offer neither certainty nor permanence.
